Add a Shower to a Bathroom with No Additional Plumbing

bathroom-reno1

Jen over at Our Home in the Cities recently converted her outdated bathroom to a bright, updated space. What caught our eye most about Jen’s renovation is the addition of a shower over the bathtub (it didn’t have one before), without running any plumbing in the walls. Best of all, Jen achieves this with less than a $200 investment.  Check out this after picture from their reno.

Jen gave us some inside information on where they purchased the materials… The faucet ($15) and shower head came from Home Depot.  The D-Style Wrap-Around Curtain Frame ($55) and the matching hand shower bracket ($45) came from Signature Hardware at those links.  The shower curtain and rings come from Target (at $30, we love it!)

Shower Rod Setup

The D-Style curtain holder mounts to the studs on only one wall, but provides enough strength to hold the curtain and shower head with no problem (just don’t try to do chin-ups on it).

We saw this setup in the UK when we visited, and several times on HGTV’s House Hunters International since then.  Another common setup to achieve the same functionality is to mount the shower holder to the wall and run the plumbing up.  The benefit of the D-style Frame is additional privacy from a window and keeping water off of the back and side walls.

Before and After 2009

Jen’s renovation is a good reminder that the first day of the Summer is coming soon, and with it, we’ll be kicking off our annual Before and After Event supporting Habitat for Humanity.  Start taking pictures of your renovations for our event, and they could be worth a $25 gift card to you and a $25 donation to Habitat in your honor!

    Fred,
I had to do a double take of this bathroom renovation….It reminds me so much of my in-laws including the window. They have an old tub, not sure if it is a claw foot, but didn’t have a shower. My father-in-law intalled the rod to hold the shower curtain the the the shower head. Pretty much to what was done here.
