Google’s Energy Calculator is Spooky

Google Energy CalculatorGoogle created a simple energy calculator which covers 5 basic ways to reduce energy needs. The calculator covers fireplace dampers, game consoles, thermostats, computers, and CFLs. Google uses your answers to calculate how much money and CO2 you are saving per year. They even provide a link for more advanced energy saving tips.

Based on my answers, I am saving $610 or 7650 pounds of CO2 per year. That’s the equivalent of not driving for 231 days!

The best part is the Holloween spin. For example, Vampires are like gaming consoles sucking up electricity. Muahahaha!

What do you think? How much are you saving?

That’s cool, but just because I don’t have a programmable thermostat doesn’t mean I’m wasting energy. The heat is off all night, and most of the day if I’m not home. And the only cooling is from fans in the summer. So they calculate “savings” unrelated to spending or usage.

I’ll agree with Joan… it only calculates if you are “average”. I’m sure we are saving way more by not heating the house above 62 when we are home or 54 when we are asleep or gone!
