Handscraped (Hand sculpted) Wood Floors
Handscraped wood floors provide the perfect combination of strength and character. New floors have modern, durable finishes, while old wood floors have amazing character. Handscraped floors bring together the best of both worlds.
What are Handscraped wood floors?
Handscraped wood flooring refers to a distressed style that resembles floor boards cut during the colonization of America. Around the 17th/18th centuries, craftsman used a hand tool to plane the wood surface. This method created a natural looking texture, complete with some irregularities.
Many homeowners want the look of an old, reclaimed wood floor but without the associated costs. And, flooring companies have begun mass producing handscraped wood floors using both machines and hand tools. It’s not the same process used by early Americans, but has the same look and feel.
Wood Finishes
Wood floors usually have a surface finish applied to improve durability. These finishes create a barrier improving water resistance and minimizing maintenance. Modern, handscraped floors are longer-lasting because they include a protective finish. But, not all wood finishes are created equal.
We like a polyurethane-based Aluminum oxide finish. The Aluminum oxide finish protects the wood by creating a very strong barrier, providing superior wear resistance. This helps preserve the texture of your handscraped floor for years to come.
