Could You Live in a Really Small House and Be Happy?

ads>

If you’re Jay Shafer, the answer is a decided yes. Jay lives comfortably in a house that’s only 89 square feet – less than 1/10 the size of the average American home.

You should watch this video. It’s an amazing feat of sustainability:

So what do you think? Could you do it? What about a house twice that size? Would 180 square feet be enough? Hat tip to financialbondage.org for sharing this.

Nope, I’m easily frustrated by clutter and would not be able to pare down the essentials enough. I mean I could do it, but I don’t want to. Life is short, I want to have loads of books, pretty vases, and throw pillows in my life!

Actually, I couldn’t even live in a really big house and be happy.

I like the idea, and love Trathen’s summary. It looks totally bucolic with the sun shining, and certainly makes 4,000 border on obscene. But where does your family fit?

    Sara – well said!

I will say that I like Jay’s perspective on life – the freedom that comes with not needing a huge amount of space or the associated mortgage. Every month we make that payment and the number hardly drops at all, I’m reminded of just HOW MUCH a house costs!

Very cool. I wish I could do it. But, alas, I need some space from away kids every once in a while. But, hey, I wouldn’t mind vacationing at his house!
