Blue Asters | Flowers that Blooms in Late Fall (with Pictures!)
On his way out the door yesterday, Fred asked me to grab the camera and write this post because it’s the beginning of December in Maryland, and we have bright purple flowers in our front gardens – still!
Last fall, when I laid out our garden design, I was hoping to find both color variety and color longevity.
When my crocuses peeked out before Spring, I was excited. And now, as I deck the halls I have to say I am more than a little bit proud of how long my asters are hanging in there.
They’re called “Wonder of Staffa Asters” on Spring Hill Nursery’s site where I bought them. They’re a native plant to this region, so they’re quite hardy and return perennially.
And as I hang our wreaths and bows this week, I’m happy to need to avoid stepping on their late-season blooms!
What do you think? Got late bloomers in your garden? Drop a link to your post in the comments!

I don’t have flowers, except for one rosebush that is still desperate to keep popping out that lone bloom. But, my lemon balm is still hanging tough – and my parsley finally layed down the other day after a week of below freezing temperatures.

Those are lovely!! I’ve been lax in getting things planted here, but this is something I definitely want to include since two things I wanted in my garden plan were lots of long-term color and a focus on plants that are native to the mid-Atlantic region. I think I’m going to pre-order them for spring shipping. Thanks for posting about these!

Are the employees at spring hill knowledgeable? I just moved to the area and need major gardening input. Everything I planted this year besides the evergreens got destroyed by the rabbits in the neighborhood.

O, nevermind, an online store, I thought it was something local. Whoops

Welcome to the area, Katharine! And yes, Spring Hill is an online store. When I want gardening advice, I go to my sister Amy (who also blogs – http://www.greengardenista.com), and she DOES have a background in gardening/landscaping. Feel free to drop her a line!
