Before and After: Kitchen Ceiling Lighting
This week’s Before and After is brought to you from our kitchen. We’ve had a stack of 5 light fixtures in boxes in the dining room for about a month waiting to be hung in the kitchen and hallway. We finally made progress on two fixtures in the kitchen this weekend. We were close to completing a third, but when we opened it, we discovered the finish didn’t match the other two.
Both of these new ceiling fixtures are Portfolio Flushmounts I found at Lowes (Item #168093 on the box). The goal was to match the style of the hanging lamp in the dining room (which wasn’t easy for me - I’m not good at knowing whether things go together unless they already come as a set).
There was one frustrating step in this installation: The two screws that are supposed to hold the fixture to the cross-mount in the electrical box were 1/2″ too short! I ended up buying a box of 8/32, 2″ screws from big orange. Those worked just fine. Of course, what project would be complete without at least 1 trip back to the big box.
Now it’s your turn! Link in your Before and After posts below using the post’s permalink and then leave a comment here. This B&A post will stay at the top until Monday evening.

I must say, there is something oddly appealing to me about the one original fixture - kind-of ‘tiffany-esque.’ I might even be able to find a place for it in our home (if you think it would ship to Canada unscathed, lol).
I enjoy your many tips and tidbits, as my hubby and I are novice DIYers with many-a-project on our list. Bought a 30-year-old bungalow 2 years ago, and each spring and summer we do as much as time and money (and our 5 kids) will allow.

et: Welcome!
I would probably go for that tiffany in certain settings… Unfortunately this house has 7.5′ ceilings and that tiffany is hanging in the middle of a room - at about 6′, and not over a table. Also, it’s plastic (not glass) and so while it photos well, if you look close, it looks rather cheap.
Since it’s plastic, I’ll bet it’ll make it to CA just fine - and it’s free if you want to pay the shipping!

Nice project. I think I usually suffer from “BigProjectitis,” as I can’t find too many small projects to tackle. Almost everything is a multiple-week adventure. Though I’m getting muuuch better at making only ONE trip to Lowes/Home Deport each week.
However, I linked to a project I did today! A demo on an archway. Only two hours, and a good workout at the same time.

Jon-Most of our projects are that way too… feel free to make “before and after” a “before and during” pic instead… I’ll be doing that as I start getting back into the basement. Sometimes, “after” is just going to be an intermediate step.
Thanks for linking in!
