Nu-Wool Cellulose Insulation: A Possibility for Our Basement

ads>

Todd at Home Construction Improvement just posted a great article on installing Nu-Wool cellulose spray-in insulation.  The article caught my eye because we’re still considering the right insulation option for our basement walls.  According to Todd,

“[Cellulose insulation] is far superior to traditional fiberglass insulation for many reasons. However, the biggest reason is the ability to block air flow. In addition to that every little crevice is filled with insulation including small holes in the framing.”

This is appealing to us because the studs in our basement sit about 1.5 inches away from the concrete block wall.  With a spray in material like Nu-Wool, we could fill in every nook and cranny of the wall, including behind the studs which would yield a very air-tight, energy efficient seal.  As an added bonus, Nu-Wool is mold resistent, something we’d prefer in our basement’s materials.

What do you think?  Have you considered spray-in cellulose insulation?

What is it like to ’spray-in’ cellulose? Is it the same way regular insulation is installed?

Our problem is the other homeowners didn’t insulate but DID finish the basement. Our home inspector didn’t seem to think anything of a non insulated finished basement so now we are trying to do some homework to figure out how to fill the gap between the metal studs and the concrete walls. There is about a 5 plus inch gap between the back of the drywall and the concrete basement walls.

It’s a puzzle. We hope someone has a good idea of how to ‘pump’ insulation using access from the drop ceiling and the walls.

    cheers,
    lc

    Hi Lisanne,

    You have a few options:

    (1) You can cut holes in the drywall between the studs and spray in loose cellulose
    (2) You can cut holes in the drywall and spray in expanding-foam insulation.
    (3) You can tear out the drywall and put up fiber glass insulation, or a spray-in cellulose like what is described in this post.

    Hi,
Cellulose is not normally recommended in a basement condition, because it cannot be exposed to constant moisture. I would suggest a closed cell spray foam product. If your basement is dry, then you can use the cellulose.
    Hope that helps
