Before And After: Guatemalan Art

This week’s Before and After shows just how small of a change can qualify for B&A. We made progress in other areas of the house this week, but this one holds significance for us.

Before and After: Guatemalan Art

We purchased this piece of hand-painted art from a large, local market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala. We visited “Chichi” (pronounced chee-chee) when we picked up our sons for the first time in January, 2007. Chichi holds one of the largest twice-weekly markets in all of Central America. It is located about 70 miles from Guatemala City and is accessible only by a single highway that stretches for miles with very few intersections. Handmade paintings like these cost about $20, and as with all markets, the price is negotiable.

This particular painting holds significance for us becasue it depicts a street in Antigua, Guatemala, the location where our boys were born. While I don’t recall us seeing this particular vantage point while we were there, it is very typical of the color and beauty of Antiguan architecture.

Here’s a single shot of the actual painting up close.

  1. Ethan, Good idea on the before and after theme. I usually forget to take the before pictures. I am sure that others do the same thing

  2. Jennifer responds:

Sometimes I have to “rig” before pictures…

But the most helpful thing for before pictures was the 5 minute video of our house we took to send to my parents when we moved in… I pull stills from it all the time!

  3. Jennifer responds:

BTW, I forgot to say I love the painting. It’s so nice to have art that reminds you of parts of your life! We have a painting of our favorite lake on our wall… it’s so nice to look at it and remember the good times!

  4. Paul,

I’m the same way. Usually well into a project before I think about sharing it online.
