House Blogger Interview: Aimee @ The Stylish Nest

Aimee @ The Stylish Nest (and Aimee’s Petite Maison) agreed to be our second interviewee.

Before we start the interview, I wanted to note that Aimee and hubby recently entered the MyFax Messiest Office contest. They were picked as one of ten finalists (watch the video, you’ll see why), but depsite our collective houseblogger efforts they didn’t win the $10,000 prize. You can still check out their messy office video entry here. I think they should’ve won. Alright, enough of that. On with the questions:

What’s your house blog name and web address?

I actually have two, the main one is Aimee’s Petite Maison at aimeeroo.com. The other is more of a wish list and inspiration houseblog called The Stylish Nest at stylishnest.aimeeroo.com.

Is this your first house blog? (If not, what others have you had?)

Yes, it is our first house blog because it is our very first home. I had been blogging before we bought the house, but the tone of my blog changed a lot once we got into our house.

Describe your house for us:

Our home was built in the 1980’s and is a four level split. This means that we have four distinct levels of living space, they built homes this way to get the most square footage on the smallest actual footprint.

What made you buy this house?

We had been looking at houses for over a year during the big housing boom. Houses in our area went quick, in fact, our house had three other offers on it when we looked at it and that was the very first day it was listed! We bought this house because we really liked it’s potential. It didn’t need a lot of fixing up, although we have done a lot to it to make it our own. It was also the right price for us inthe right neighborhood close to my parents who I take care of.

What’s the biggest, hardest, or craziest (pick one or more) project you’ve completed so far?

I would say that installing our French Door was the craziest project. Our house didn’t have a back door originally, so we put in the door ourselves in the spot that used to be a window. I say it’s the craziest because we did it all ourselves in a day. That includes buying the door, bringing it home in our truck, somehow getting it in the house without killing ourselves and cutting the hole in the wall. Everything! In a day! And French doors are heavy… and I am a small girl.

The two biggest projects were our kitchen redo and my front yard landscaping project. Everything you see in the photo was put there by me and all the planting areas used to just be grass. Hubby helped witha lot of digging out the grass, but the garden is my baby.

What project(s) are you working on now?

Right now I am on a “white out” frenzy. I am trying to get colors and paint on all the white walls of the house. We are also doing other little things, like replacing switches and plugs. We do have a big master bathroom project coming up, as well as a big backyard project: steps from our new door and probably a patio and a fence. I am also working on a pond and more planting beds.

What’s the biggest project you haven’t started yet?

Our fourth floor is an unfinished basement and we do plan to finish it. It is the biggest project that hasn’t even had a bit of attention yet.

Is there a room or area in your house that you love the most? Why?

We love our family room area and kitchen most right now. They are the two rooms that we have changed the most. The kitchen now has white cabinets and new countertops as well as new appliances and a new sink. Our family room is the room we spend the most time in though because it is our media room. We painted it a nice dark color and set it up for movie nights. There is still a lot we want to do in that room, but it’s where all the fun is, so even though it’s not perfect, it is our favorite.

Would you buy your house again? (Why/why not)

Yes and no. There are drawbacks to this kind of floor plan, but we love the area and our house, and it was a great buy too.

What question should I ask the next interviewee?

You could ask them why they decided to start a house blog. :)

Would you like to add anything else?

Just to say thanks for the interview! It was a lot of fun. Also, for everyone working on a house… remember to have fun, and make it for the way you actually live your lives! We love function and beauty together, and one thing we promised ourselves when we got our house was that everything we did would be because WE liked it and it worked for us. You wouldn’t believe the difference that makes in our home, and reducing stress during projects too!
