Why the basement project first?

The basement project is an important one in our house, because once its finished, we can proceed with a series of “room moves” that we think will really accommodate our lifestyle better.

Essentially, when the basement is done, we’ll move our TV off the first floor to the basement. (The TV is currently in the “formal living room”, which isn’t really formal at all). We’ll move the dining room to the formal living room, and the office to the dining room. That will free up another bedroom on the second floor for more kids. Whew … makes me tired even thinking about all the movement :-)

Besides making room for more kids, the basement is going to be Kim’s and my get-away room - a place to relax, entertain friends, and enjoy the house without the fear of stepping on Thomas, Percy, James, or any of their railway friends.

Do you have a “get-away” or “sanctuary” in your house? If so, I’d love to see a picture for some ideas.
