Real Simple Magazine

It seems like a lot of magazines are struggling with the tough times. I can’t say that I actually read many of them but the trend is obvious. A few blogs I do read have keep me informed.

  • Amy @ Cape Cod Makeover highlighted Domino and Craft Magazines as they went under.
  • Sherry @ Young House Love let us know when Country Home and Cottage Living was discontinued.

Well, Jocie just started getting a magazine called Real Simple and I hope it doesn’t go under too.

Real Simple Magazine

I picked up the March, 2009 issue and was kinda intrigued by several of the articles. Their Home section has a good article about 8 common household hazards (look out for radon). They also did a “road test” of reusable bags focusing on durability, capacity and how well they fold up. Jocie has a few reusable Target bags that are starting to show their age. Maybe we’ll replace them with Whole Food bags; big capacity and small price tag.

Another article I really enjoyed was about repurposing old household items. One reader suggests using an old soap case to store your point-and-shoot camera.

There are a few articles that don’t really speak to me. I doubt I’ll read about how to make my manicure last longer between appointments.

I don’t have much down time these days thanks to baby Izzie, but if you’re looking for a new magazine to fill the void, check out Real Simple.

What do you think? What magazine do you enjoy these days?

I may take a look at it again, but I’ll admit that back when it first came out I wasn’t impressed: There were several reasons but the main one I recall is what I perceived as a real disconnect between their stated purpose as a magazine, but with a decorating section that was recommending an “inexpensive” makeover that included throw pillows that cost over a hundred dollars each, and a profile of some folks who were able to quit their very high paying corporate jobs and buy a large lavender farm (or something like that) – things that weren’t options for “simple living” for most people that I knew. But perhaps they’ve changed their focus away from what I honestly saw as “simple living for rich people.”

As for other magazines… I used to get lots of them, and miss getting them, but ecologically and practically, I could no longer justify then. I now subscribe to a couple of cooking sites online instead of getting several cooking magazines. Ditto for Consumer Reports online. The only print magazines we still get are what comes with our AARP membership (and it’s a good magazine, too) and — yes, I’ll admit it — Reader’s Digest.

@Leslie, Wow… if I was reading about people quitting their high paying jobs and $100 pillows, I’d be pretty turned off too. I didn’t see anything like that in this issue.

I like reading online too, but I do get CR magazine. It’s nice to be able to thumb through it no matter where I am.

Regarding reusable bags – I still have an unbleached cotton bag I was given by a supermarket in Belgium 10 years ago that I keep folded up in my purse for emergency (milk, bread, etc.) shopping purchases. It’s still going strong!

Real Simple is one of my favorites~! My house doesn’t have that “designer” look, but I’m constantly paring down and it looks pretty good. I love open spaces and I enjoy the photos and articles. I have found things that I can apply to my house & my life without spending a fortune.
