Review: Craftsman VersaTrack Trackwall

Trackwall with joinerThis is the fourth post in my Craftsman Tool Storage series. We’ve already covered the Craftsman Workbench, the Craftsman Floor Cabinet, and the Craftsman 5-Drawer Addition (links for reviews). Craftsman was kind enough to send us some trackwall. Read on to learn more about this product and where it can be purchased.

We feel Craftsman VersaTrack is one of their most innovative storage solutions. It’s simple to install, yet very versatile. It’s also incredible strong- enabling you to hang very heavy objects. It’s a huge benefit to anyone looking to maximize their storage space.

Where to Buy Craftsman VersaTrack

VersaTrack can be purchased in 42 inch segments. Plan out your install so you order the appropriate number of pieces and don’t forget that VersaTrack can easily integrate pegboard. You can purchase VersaTrack for $9.99 per piece from Sears or Craftsman.com. Here’s the link:

Hooks
One of the biggest benefits of VersaTrack are all the hooks designed to work with it. These hooks enable you to store so many different items.

  • Short general purpose hook – This is ideal for axes, sledge hammers, buckets- anything up to 50 lbs.
  • Long general purpose hook – This hook can be used for lots of things like strollers, and other larger items. Again, rated for up to 50 lbs.
  • Curved pivot hook – The curved hook is great for long handle items like brooms, and rakes. Rated for 25 lbs.
  • Large hook – Coiled garden hose extension cords would fit nicely on this hook. Rated for 30 lbs.
  • Standard double hook – Great for rakes, shovels, etc. Two of these can even store a ladder. Rated for 25 lbs.
  • Narrow wire basket – Perfect for golf balls, sponges, and anything else you might want to put in a small wire basket. Rated for 35 lbs.

Really, these hooks can store whatever you want (as long as it fits and doesn’t exceed weight limits). Hooks are sold separately.

10118-short-general-hookJoiners and Endcaps
Craftsman also makes joiners and endcaps for their trackwall. Joiners are used in-line to join two pieces of track, however you can’t hang items (hooks, cabinets) on top of them. The endcaps can help keep pegboard in place, but shouldn’t be considered a necessity. Both are sold separately too.

Configurations
Another strong feature of VersaTrack is that you can purchase as much (or as little) as you want. Install VersaTrack over an entire wall for ultimate versatility and storage space. Don’t want to spend that much? Why not use it with some pegboard. VersaTrack is designed to secure the top and bottom of 1/8″ or 1/4″ thick pegboard. Or maybe you just want a couple pieces to hang tools or cabinets. You get to choose how the track is setup according to your needs and budget.

Dimensions and Weight Limit
VersaTrack is made of hardened plastic and each piece is 42″ long by 5 ½” tall. It took some digging but I found that the trackwall is rated up to 75 lbs per linear foot. That means a four foot section can hold 300 lbs! Of course, this is only true when mounted accurately.

Installing VersaTrack
VersaTrack can be installed over drywall, wall studs or masonry. If you install this over drywall, use a stud-finder to locate studs. Drywall anchors alone will not be enough to hold the maximum weight and each piece should be anchored to at least 2 studs. VersaTrack does not come with hardware to install it, so swing by your local DIY center.

  • Purchase #10 or 5mm masonry or wood screws depending on application
  • Drill a 1/8″ pilot holes
  • Place two screws at each end of the VersaTrack. Position them about 3/8″ from the ends
  • Also place screws every 16″-24″ apart
  • Countersink all screws
  • Be sure the trackwall is level

If you are installing this over masonry, you will want to purchase or borrow a hammer drill. Trust me, it’s worth it!
