Review: Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan from Home Depot

ads>

You may recall that back in October Home Depot sponsored a great $175 ceiling fan giveaway on our site. In addition to HD’s generosity to our readers, they also sent us a gift card to pick out and review any ceiling fan from the more than 300 they offer.  Kim and I were very excited for the opportunity, as we’ve lived without a ceiling fan since we moved into this home 3 years ago, and had previously grown accustomed to the luxury at our prior house.

Initial Criteria for our Fan

Our house has 7-1/2 foot ceilings, which means we needed a fan with a relatively low profile.  We decided in advance that we wouldn’t get a fan with lights to conserve on space in the room. Instead, we’ll install overhead recessed lights around the fan later.  (Our room is big enough to pull this off)  For now, we’ll go with our nightstand lamps that already serve as the main light source in the room.

Also, I’m not a big fan of flush mount ceiling fans.  I like the fan to have at least a small hanging bar between the fan box cover and the fan itself.  I’ve found that the bar setup tends to reduce rattling, something that was an absolute must for our sleep area.  With these criteria and Home Depot card in hand, we headed off to the local store to browse their inventory.

In Store Experience

After looking for about 30 minutes at Home Depot (they’ve got a LOT of fans, even in the store), we finally settled on a very simple (but what we think is simply elegant) Hamtpon Bay model for our room (pictured in the upper right).  You can imagine our delight when we discovered that this particular fan was on sale for only $39.95!  Perhaps we just don’t have expensive taste… in fans anyway.  We would link to this fan at HD’s site, but unfortunately we can’t find the fan anywhere online.

The Installation Process

Installation consisted of 4 easy steps (the two hardest of which we already blogged about):

  • First, we cut a hole in our ceiling and added a fan brace and mounting box.   This proved to be much easier than we expected with Westinghouse’s Saf-T-Brace system.
  • Next, we re-wired our wall switch so that instead of controlling an outlet, it would control our overhead fan.   We installed a Hampton Bay fan/light switch (with the intention of only using the fan speed control for now).
  • We then assembled the fan and installed the fan mounting components to the electrical box in the ceiling.
  • Finally, we hung the fan on its ceiling mounting bracket and performed the final wiring.
Total Project Time: 3 hours.
Total Project Cost:  Less than $80, including the fan, switch, mounting bracket, and Romex.

Before and After Pictures

Here’s what the room looked like before:

And here’s what it looks like now (complete with a little dust because we run it constantly):

Thanks, Home Depot!

We’ve been using this fan for the better part of three months now and are extremely pleased with the results!  The fan is ultra-quiet and provides great air circulation.  Plus, it accents the rod-iron in our bed perfectly.
