Review: Safety 1st High-Definition Digital Video Monitor

by Jocelyn Hagan (email Jocelyn) | September 8, 2009 | 1 Comment »

Before Izzie was born, lots of people told me to get a video monitor, but I thought it was pretty frivolous. So I got a simple (but great) audio monitor – Safety 1st High Definition Digital Audio Monitor. It has great reception, even in our townhouse community, and has crisp, clear sound, picking up even the smallest whimpers. But in the end, I discovered there’s no replacement for actually seeing your baby. A video monitor allows you to know if they need help, or just more time to work it out on there own.

Reasons to Get a Video Monitor

Now that Izzie is 5 months old and turning over, sleeping has brought on new problems. There have been times when she has cried (and I let her “cry it out”) only to later find that she had gotten her arms stuck under the crib bumper or in between the spokes of the crib. Obviously, if I had known that she was stuck and probably hurting, I would have gone to help her. But I didn’t go in to check on her because I do not want her to learn that every time she cries, I will come. My sister, a mother of four, said that she would have also loved a video monitor for times that her babies had “blow outs” or thrown up on themselves. So I did some investigating and found a Safety 1st Video Monitor and LOVE it! It not only helps me to know when (and when not to) check on Izzie, but reduces my anxiety and increases her safety!

Safety 1st Video Monitor Features

This monitor has some wonderful features that makes it easy to recommend to other moms!

  • Crisp sound with no static
  • Great reception, with no interference
  • Excellent picture quality
  • Camera has day and night time settings, also increasing picture quality
  • Monitor is small and portable, with belt clip
  • Camera mounts to wall (unlike other models that you have to place in the crib)
  • Ability to zoom and pan, allowing better visibility as babies start to move in the crib

Ways to Improve the Video Monitor

The only down side I have found (based on other people’s experience) with this monitor is that the battery life decreases over time. To counteract this, I suggest turning off the monitor when it is not in use and setting the picture to view only when you press the button.

Overall Impressions

Again, I tried to save money in the beginning by just getting an audio monitor, but wished I had gone ahead and bought this Safety 1st High-Definition Digital Video Monitor.  A video monitor lets you know your baby is safe and secure without distrubing their sleep or creating bad habits. You can purchase from Amazon for $156.00 if you can wait for it to be shipped.

What do you think? Did you purchase a video monitor?
