Sitemeter Crashing Web Sites Using Internet Explorer on August 1, 2008; August 2, 2008

ads>

We apologize if you’ve been trying to visit the site this evening (1-Aug-08) and it’s been down.

The SiteMeter (www.sitemeter.com) tracking code that counts visitors to our site was causing all visits from Internet Explorer to crash.  We first realized the issue at 8:30pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), and given there was no other reporting of the error at the time, we believe we were the first to find it.

After further investigation, we discovered that SiteMeter is bringing down every site where its counter code is loaded when the visiting browser is Internet Explorer versions 6.0 and 7.0The error may also affect Internet Explorer 5.5.

Tens of thousands of publishers use sitemeter to track their content, including thousands of bloggers.  The result: sitemeter takes down the internet?  not quite.. but its pretty amazing.

The text of the error received is: “Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site.”

How to Fix the IE error on Wordpress, Blogger, and Other Sites

We removed the Sitemeter tracking code from our site and now the site is loading fine.  If you need to remove this from your site, the code you’re looking for is:

It appears the entire Sitemeter site is hosed. If you use the Javascript version, it fails in IE, but if you use the code in the NOSCRIPT tags, it seems to work, although it probably isn’t tracking correctly.

For a laugh, try using Google to find “Sitemeter,” then try opening Site Meter’s web site — same result. After reading your entry here, I wondered if they knew what their software is doing. I still wonder. <:(

Thanks for posting your information, since I was wondering if something was wrong with my PC, as I couldn’t open a couple of my favorite blogs including Instapundit.

Thank you so much for posting this. In googling it, it seems you may be the first and maybe only one to do so, so far. From your timeline, I figured out about the same time you did, what was going on. I took the coding off of one site and it’s loading fine now. I have this code on at least two dozen web sites, but I think it’s all coming down tonight. Kill the Web? Yep, it’s at least put a huge dent in it! And from here in Arizona (AZ time which right now is Pacific)… at 8:10pm, it’s still allll down. Same error message and it kills IE7. The person above who was able to contact Sitemeter via a contact form? How did you manage that? I get the same thing happen at their site, and down it goes. What a mess. With all the Hellish things in net life, we don’t need Stats Counter Hell. sigh….

You can picture us rifling through our code trying to figure out what we had done… then to think “wow, our code totally screwed up internet explorer on our machines, because now EVERY site is failing.”

Click on the menu Tools -> Internet Options.
    Click on the tab Security.
Click on the icon Restricted Sites.
    Click on the button Sites.
Under Add this website to the zone:
Type the text ‘*.sitemeter.com’ (without quotes).
Click the Add button. Click Close. Click OK.

This fix is going around the net now and if everyone does it then Site Meter will become useless.

Just move the code to the end of the HTML BODY section.

This is a long known MS/IE bug that manifests itself if you have the offending js inside a table. Why? I dunno. But if you move the tracking code to the very bottom of the page just before the closing /body tag it will work fine, guaranteed. Well… no guarantees, but it works.

I think the most annoying aspect of this is the fact that other sites have plagiarized your post, added and subtracted here and there, and reposted it as their own. Some of these copycat sites are now the top-ranked Google results for searches for this problem.

Like I said on my site, I really wish my SiteMeter were up right now so I could see how many hits this problem is generating! AdSense tells me I’ve already had about 50% of my usual daily number of visitors, and it’s only 9:00 AM – on a Saturday, when most people aren’t surfing from work.

    d.b. echo,
I atually use 3 different stat systems on my main site. SiteMeter, Stat Counter and Google Anylitics. Each have a couple key things that the other ones don’t have so I get the best picture using all 3.

You ought to try Stat Counter for now.

  • 1WebDiva responds...
    August 2nd, 2008 9:13 am

All of my Sitemeter codes are just before the tag, and not in tables. Didn’t stop this from happening. However, this fix listed above, ” http://*.sitemeter.com ” in the restricted sites for Security, takes it ALL out of the pages…. the icon doesn’t even appear and the sites load fine. Hmmmm. That’s good for we who know what is going on, but is useless for most of our visitors. Sitemeter is coming down off all my couple dozen sites, today. What really bugs me is, as mentioned before, the slowness of Sitemeter service. I’ve had problems in the past, and this thing looks like S.M. isn’t even aware! It would seem logical, since they have a newsletter “list,” that some kind of Email could be sent out to users worldwide. In the end, this small act could literally “save his butt.” And another question: Is this happening with PAID Sitemeter accounts?

I was able to find this memo on the Sitemeter Support page. It does give a list of effected servers. . This was a planned major upgrade, however I would be willing to bet that the Internet Explorer Crash issue was not part of the show. I can live without the page stats for a short time but am going to have to remove SiteMeter from all my sites forever..

    ————Memo From SiteMeter Support ———

    Greetings,

Our hosting provider has scheduled an outage on August 3, 2008 from 12:01 AM – 05:00 AM to consolidate their network into a single autonomous system. The following servers will be affected:

    SM1, S17, S21, S26, S36, S37, S38, S39, S40, S41, S46 and S47

They will be migrating to a new network hardware infrastructure during this maintenance outage. The actual outage time maybe less than scheduled outage time. We apologize that your account will be affected during this scheduled maintenance. If you have any questions please let us know.

    Thank you,
    SiteMeter Support

Hi Delta, thanks for passing this along. Again, I ask, what part of “tell your customers” does Sitemeter not understand? Even this notice, posted to just their Support page, could have been sent out as a listmail alert. Even if it turns out that the current chaos is not a part of their server migration/maintenance, at least users would have had a heads up on WHERE to start with this, once the crashing began. However, I am willing to bet that this very alert is behind all of this. sigh. Internet life. Gotta love it. We indeed are at the mercy of every service that runs the thing.

I have one paid and a bunch of free ones. When it first happend I was on a free ones site and I notices that the counter wasn’t there but didn’t think anything of it.

So the question is if I remove all the scripts from my sites would that really fix it for getting into sitemeter.com even though I can get into those sites?

  • 1WebDiva responds...
    August 2nd, 2008 9:26 am

For a good portion of the night, I’ve been over at Hotscripts.com and similar, looking through what is available as a SCRIPT for web stats. There seem to be a number of good ones. Anyone have any experience with a script that would be on your own server, and not reliant on an outside service? I would think Cpanel/Fantastico would offer something like this. But it looks like it does not.

I’ve been slowly implementing Google Analytics on several of my sites. This seems an excellent solution. However, “going there” seems a pain. One thing I do like about Sitemeter is the instant click to view things.

  • Leon responds...
    August 2nd, 2008 9:43 am

When I discovered this problem late lastnight I removed the Sitemeter script from my site’s index page and it solved the error problem but… I then signed up at GoStats as a replacement. Internet Explorer would not let me log into the account I just created but using Firefox I was able to login just fine. Because of this I’m thinking maybe this is much more than just an issue with Sitemeter! Looking forward to seeing how this all pans out and how long it will take to know the truth of what is going on.

  • John Moonie responds...
    August 2nd, 2008 3:12 pm

6 of 7 of my sites were down this morning (UK) with the message regarding being unable to open. The clue was that one of these sites is live but does not have Sitemeter and the others did. This one site was OK. I was having a go at my ISP first but did a test to comment the sitemeter code on the main site and it worked following that. It would have been quite a big job to extract all the sitemeter code so I left it for a while hoping things would improve, and all 6 sites are now operating again. However Sitemeter.com does not allow logon and still displays the original “unable to open” error.

What concerns me about this is NO COMMUNICATION from Sitemeter. If I were still in my old job as a system applications manager, did a big release on Friday and walked away for the weekend (as it appears with nothing else to go on) I would probably have been fired for gross misconduct.

Plus the length of time the systems have been down means potential loss of business as some have e-commerce facilities.

A similar problem with service occurred a few months ago when a whole week’s worth of stats just dropped out. The response was – Oh sorry, but we can’t get it back. Oh dear, very unprofessional and where’s the backup? The same may have happened here where a release has been made and bits are wonky and untested. The best solution would be to back it out quickly to avoid inconveniencing clients paid or not (if you paid for this how do you feel now?) and rerelease the previous version to a synch point. Then get the damn thing fixed properly before releasing!

I must say this is the first major fault for a long time but it does not inspire confidence when no one appears to either know about it in Sitemeter or are just keeping quiet and hope it will all blow over. I don’t think so!

  • BobM responds...
    August 2nd, 2008 3:19 pm

This may never come up again, but next time folks might be able to recognize the source of the problem like non-techie I did. When the message popped up about “IE cannot open…operation aborted,” I looked down at the bottom of the screen to see what was loading at the moment it stopped. It was “Downloading picture” with “sitemeter” in the address. Same thing at the two blogs I tried to open. Therefore, I Googled “sitemeter” along with the words in the message and found this site, which told me I had found the problem. Of course, this method relies on having someone on the Web who has posted something to tell us non-techies what’s happening.

Well it has been a long and frustrating day on the net for a lot of people. I thought I would show the latest from SiteMeter Support. I really wonder what kind of hit their company took. I know I am not a happy camper. The numbers numbers will be interesting. I wonder if there is still a shutdown happening on the 3rd as mentioned in the original memo. Does not matter to me as I no longer have it running on my sites. I am looking forward to an email from support…LOL

=======« SiteMeter IE Issues Resolved ============

    Dear SiteMeter Users,

We have become aware of a compatibility issue with our SiteMeter tracking code and IE 7 (possibly IE 6) browsers that started sometime last night.

The problem was related to some work we were doing on the backend system for our upcoming website launch.

We’ve identified and resolved two separate but related issues –

1 – IE Users viewing pages – There was a problem with users who placed their SiteMeter tracking code outside of their HTML Body Tag. Because of the changes we made this created a failure for visitors viewing sites using Internet Explorer 7.

2 – Accessing SiteMeter and Stats – Individuals trying to access or view their SiteMeter stats by clicking on their SiteMeter logo/icons were unable to gain access. This again appears to have affected only individuals using IE7.

At this time both problems have been fixed and our services are fully operational.

For those who removed the SiteMeter code from your pages please be assured that the problem has been resolved and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

    Sincerely,
    The SiteMeter Team

Some feedback on other posts…. I just tried to access the Sitemeter site. If you go to http://sitemeter.com, you will get the IE7 message that the page does not exist. If you key in http://www.sitemeter.com, it goes there with no problem (with the www in the address). And I was able to log in to the 6-7 of my 24 accounts. So except for the fact that it SHOULD also be working with the web address without the www, it’s working again for me.

And yes, as mentioned above, what tipped me off so early in the game, like within minutes of things going down, was the status bar message that the sitemeter image was not loading. But that happens a lot on the Net. But it’s not enough to “take things down.” So it wasn’t the non-loading of the image, but whatever the coding issue was. Quite frankly this is a new one on me. This particular message and then the browser crash… I’ve never had this happen. In 14 years online. I still think I am going to migrate to a different solution. This was very high stress, eh? LOL.

This guy has a more complete explanation of what went wrong:

    http://motls.blogspot.com/2008/08/fix-internet-explorer-7-with-sitemeter.html

So the problem is actually a known bug in Internet Explorer, and SiteMeter made a change that ran afoul of this bug. (And apparently didn’t bother to test out the change with IE, apparently thinking “Who uses Internet Explorer anyway?”) There’s no reason that SiteMeter should be the only ones with this problem.

I started seeing it intermittently on one site Thursday night, and was thinking there might have been a bug with a rotating ad. But she also had a SiteMeter, so when everything went down on Friday, I assumed she had just been on a server that had this change rolled out early. But after SiteMeter cleared this up, I still encountered the problem one more time on her site. Now I’m back to thinking it’s ALSO a recurring ad.

Anybody else still running into instances of this problem?

i thought it was beacuse of my layout codes.. since i have updated to wp2.6 i thought it’s compatibility issues so i reverted my layout to the default one. i even removed my extreme tracker thinking it was the culprit.

So it was sitemeter afterall. Haha.

    Thanks for the info :D

    It isn’t fixed.

I had to remove Sitemeter today when I doscovered that visitors were being redirected to some Google search. After I deleted the Sitemeter code, the problem went away.

Pity. I used to like the Sitemeter service.

Well, this is all very interesting. I have the SiteMeter code on every page of my web site. However, when I visit the site, it doesn’t crash IE7 and I can view the site perfectly OK. Having said that, the SiteMeter icon with visit stats does not appear on any of my pages but that’s because Kaspersky Internet Security banner blocker prevents the SiteMeter stats from appearing.

If, on the other hand, I visit the SiteMeter website using IE7, I get a load of gibberish. To be specific, I get an incomplete page – bits missing throughout the page and I cannot access my account, despite the fact that I’m still paying $6.95 per month for the privilege! However, I still receive (via e-mail) my weekly stats.

Presumably, if I was to use Firefox, for example, I’d be able to access the SiteMeter site?

I’m not happy at all because I pay the premium for my Sitemeter and haven’t been able to access my stats for over a week. IE and Google Chrome just get a blank white page when trying to access their site, they’ve sent no emails out explaining what’s going on and so far have failed to respond to an enquiry/complaint. Not good enough at all. I can’t even get onto their site to cancel my payment schedule.
