Top 5 Home Decor Trends in 2009
Okay friends, from me to you, my top five picks for HOT home decor trends:
Neutral Walls
When I first moved into my house, painting with bold colors was in, so of course, I painted every room a different color. But now, neutral, light-colored walls are the style. On the plus side, neutral walls provide a blank canvas for the style of the room. It is much easier to re-style your look with out the bother of re-painting. The down-side is that light walls are not as kid friendly, showing smudges and crayon marks. I recommend investing in a good paint (check out the Ralph Lauren review) that will cover evenly and withstand a good scrubbing.
Upholstered furniture
Grandma looks like she’s back in style with her floral, upholstered furniture…well maybe not quite. While leather was all the rage (and still is a great option), look to accent a room or existing solid furniture, with an upholstered chair or couch in a fun color or pattern. Isn’t this a fabulous accent chair?
Dark Stained Woods
As you have seen in earlier posts, we recently put hardwoods in our first floor. The wood we chose, Natural Brazilian Walnut, is on the darker side, but the color variation brings more light than the current style. American Walnut is a touch darker and very neutral (without yellow or red tones like bamboo or cherry). To create this even, dark look, staining the wood is a great option, especially if you plan to refinish pre-existing hard woods. Unstained woods, like we bought, show a lot of variation in the wood, and while beautiful, is more of a traditional look than trendy. Also, wide planks (wider than 3 inches) are the trend, and while more expensive, are really beautiful. Check out Lumber Liquidators for some great deals on HOT hard woods!
Bold Patterns
Since your “canvas” is fairly neutral in color, with light walls and dark hard woods, color and style is brought to the room, through BOLD patterns. Accent pillows, furniture, area rugs, drapes, and wall hangings can incorporate bold and complimentary patterns to create unique and exciting atmosphere. And while you may have thought florals were a thing of the 80’s, they are back in a fresh new way! Check out this patterned accent pillow and wall hanging from Amazon:
COLOR Trends – Blues, Greens, and Purples
A few years ago, dark, warm colors (especially reds and oranges) were popular, creating a cozy atmosphere. Now, look to accent with lighter, brighter hues of blue, green, and purple. Again, with neutral floors and walls, it is a quick and cheap way to quickly re-style a room adding accent pillows, rugs, and wall hangingsin the hottest new colors.

While I don’t follow trends, I’m glad to read this. I always thought I never liked prints and floral prints in particular. And I never liked recliners at all. Then one day I walked into a LaZBoy and saw a beautiful recliner in a floral print that I just had to have. Now I have two and I’m a little afraid I’ve turned into an old lady. Not possible, is it? (and yes, that accent chair is fabulous!)
