SYLVANIA LED Challenge

Ethan | April 13, 2011

A few weeks ago, SYLVANIA asked us to participate in their Room Makeover Challenge, and we jumped at the opportunity. The goal was to remind everyone of how easy it can be to conduct a weekend room makeover, and to consider how LED light bulbs can play a part. LED Light Bulbs We’ve already covered some of the great benefits of LED lighting in the home even as they compare to CFL bulbs. LED’s use far less energy than incandescent bulbs and about half as much energy as CFL’s. LED bulbs feature an incredible lifespan, reaching...

Kichler Design Pro LED Under Cabinet Lighting Review

Fred | October 7, 2010

We love dramatic under cabinet lighting. It’s one of those great additions to a modern kitchen that adds both function and style to the design. Not only does it provide good work lighting for everyday tasks, it also show off the beauty of other kitchen features, like intricate tile back splashes or a stunning set of custom ceramic canisters. Three weeks ago we gave you a preview of Kichler’s new Design Pro under cabinet lighting. As we were planning the details of our kitchen remodel, Kichler reached out to us and asked if...

How to Install Under Cabinet Lighting

Ethan | July 14, 2010

I’m a big fan of under cabinet lighting in kitchens. It’s a great way to provide additional, direct light for a space that would otherwise be obscured by shadow. And done right, all the wires and bulbs are completely hidden. Installing under cabinet lighting is a great DIY project, especially when you have the right materials and a few tricks to hide the wires. It’s best done during a kitchen remodel when you’ll have access to walls for fishing wire but can be achieved afterward too. I’m going to provide a...

IC vs. Non-IC Recessed Can Lights: What’s the Difference?

Fred | December 1, 2009

When it comes to recessed can lighting, “IC” means “insulation contact”. IC-rated cans (usually labeled as “IC-rated” or simply “IC”) are appropriate for attic installations and anywhere else you plan to have insulation touching the can’s housing. Non-IC cans (almost always labeled “Non-IC”) must have an air gap (3″ or more) between the can and the insulation, meaning you’ll have to cut the insulation back from the edge of the can. Putting insulation in contact...

UtiliTech Tripod Work Lights Review

Fred | October 22, 2009

We’re just about finished the electrical rough-in of our basement game room.  One of the final steps is to remove the original lighting circuit that powers four ceramic keyless overhead fixtures that the builder installed in the original unfinished basement. We’ve run Romex drops for can lights to be installed post-drywall, so once the existing circuit is removed, we’ll be in the dark. We decided to head to our local Lowes and pick-up the closest thing we could find to good temporary work lighting.  Our choice: two...

Dimmer Switches: Capacity, Heat Dissipation, Maximum Wattage, and More…

Fred | October 20, 2009

Dimmer switches are one of those great modern marvels that make life better… They can set the mood for a romantic evening, or keep you from squinting when you’re waking up in the morning. We’re installing four dimmer switches that will control the overhead lighting in our basement, and figured you might want to know a little bit more about how this life-improving gadget works. How Dimmer Switches Work Back in the olden days, dimmer switches varied the voltage that traveled to the lamp using a rheostat, basically an adjustable...
