Update Router Firmware to Fix Internet Connection Problems

I’ve been frustrated with my internet connection for some time now. Originally, I thought Comcast was to blame for poor connectivity. But, I just updated my wireless router firmware and solved the problem.

Unstable Internet Connection

Here is a description of my problem. My computer would claim to have a strong and valid connection to the internet but this was obviously not true. I would go through the process of disconnecting from my home wireless network and reconnect (several times typically). Eventually, I would receive a valid IP address and life was good. Comcast will suggest restarting the wireless router and cable modem. Both had minimal effect.

Updating Wireless Router Firmware

I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. After investigating, I found that my firmware was from 2005. Check out the Linksys site. You can download newer firmware and it describes how to update it. Here is the process I followed:

  • Log in to your wireless router configuration page. The Linksys default page is 192.168.1.1 (default login is Admin, password Admin). Change the default log-in for security purposes. Log in and select the “Administration” tab. This will tell you how old your software is and what version you’ll need to upgrade. I have version 4.XX
  • Download the newer firmware. Be careful. You need to know the specific model and version. Else, you might download the wrong file.
  • Establish a wired connection to your wireless router. Typically, all this means is running a network (cat 5) cable from your computer to the router. Disable any wireless connections to avoid confusion. Log in to your wireless router.
  • Select the Administrator tab and select “Update Firmware”. Find the file you downloaded from Linksys and let run. Don’t interrupt the process and make sure your laptop battery won’t run out.

What do you think? Did this solve your connectivity problem?

You might want to try the dd-wrt opensource firmware. It has some killer features that are supported in your linksys firmware. I’d wait to see if your new firmware solves the issues first. If you don’t need the other features (VPN, voip, other security algorithms) then it isn’t worth it to switch.

BTW, I’ve heard that the power inverter can be the cause of issues. A UPS can smooth out the power input and prevent those issues.

@KeithG, Thanks for the info. Updating the fireware took care of my problems. I looked at opensource options but I don’t really use any of the advanced features. Hadn’t heard of the the power inverter. Thanks for the heads-up.

I’m just referring to the transformer in between your router and the 110V outlet. Some suspect that they are under performing and causing flucuations in the router.
