Decoupage Glue is one of the best crafting supplies to have on hand, and it is non-toxic and easy to clean up, so its great for using with the kids too. Mod Podge (name brand) is expensive at the store and you can go through it pretty quickly, especially if kids are involved. Here is the quickest, easiest, and cheapest project I will probably ever share with you (but don’t hold me to it) and all for $1. Lol!
Materials:
- Elmer’s Glue
- Water
- Ball jar
- Measuring cup
Step 1: Measure
Measure 1 part Emer’s glue and 1 part water. Hint: you can get glue for cheap at the Dollar store!
Step 2: Combine
Place glue and water in Ball jar, or any container you wish to use. Ball jars are wonderful because I have a ton of them, they are pretty, and they seal up nicely so the glue won’t dry out. You also want a container with somewhat of a wide opening so you can fit your brush or sponge into it.
Step 3: Shake
Shake, shake, and shake some more! This would be a great way for your toddlers to get our their wiggles for sure, because you need to do a whole lot of shakin’!
Apply using a paint brush or sponge brush. It works best to apply multiple, thin coats, allowing it to dry in between coats.
I recently used my homemade Decooupage for making wooden owls but its also great for putting decals and pictures on pretty much any craft project.

I love it! We used to do this all the time when making crafts! How did I not make the connection? We used it to make collages on just about anything – a jar/can (for holding pens and pencils), bedroom trash cans… I love that you used it for the owls.
I used to Mod Podge jigsaw puzzles to save them. Haven’t Podged anything in ages.
I’d heard of homemade Modge Podge, but never taken the time to look up a recipe. If I had known it was this simple I would have been doing it a long time ago!

I feel so swindled! I had no idea it would be so easy to make mod podge. Do you feel like it’s as durable and easy to spread evenly? If so, I will never buy another bottle of mod podge again!
I always seem to have lots of Elmer’s glue in the house, but never seem to have Modge Podge when I need it. Thanks for finding a perfect solution.
