Basement Makeover: Part One!

Moving this past November has kept us busy, especially with the holidays, but this basement makeover was at the top of my list. Not because it is the most ugly (2 original bathrooms and kitchen are the top of that list), but rather we use the space a lot and a makeover is within our current budget.

Our old couch I bought over 10 years ago, before Ethan and I were married. At the time, I got a great deal and I loved the bold red. Actually, I still do. But after ten years, two babies, lots of spit up and toddlers watching tv and jumping, it has ceased being comfortable. Seriously, UNCOMFORTABLE. Ethan’s least favorite aspect was the sagging cushions. Mine was the worn out welting (aka white piping) that stabbed me every time I sat. Notice the stylish kid toys, cups, and treadmill. I can feel your jealousy. I know.

When Ethan and I started couch shopping you can guess what was at the top of our “must” list: no welting and attached cushions. We both feel in love with the look and price of this couch from Jennifer Convertibles and the rest fell into place. I first went online and pinned my inspiration and favorite colors and fabrics. Check out my Pinterest board for all the inspiration and links to all the elements of my basement makeover! And while you’re there, give me a quick follow – jocieOPC. πŸ™‚

Online Fabric Store sent me a few of my favorite fabrics (They did not pay me for the post, just sent me fabric. Opinions are 100% mine.) I used the fabric to make pillows and will be making curtains soon! Check out my easy tutorial on sewing a basic pillow, but coming soon – how to sew faux welting. Here are the fabrics I used for the pillows, but also check out my pinterest board for other fabrics I like and give me an opinion: Portfolio Bansuri Storm FabricPremier Prints Jo Jo Premier Navy Slub FabricPremier Prints Raji Corn Yellow Slub FabricPremier Prints Barber Corn Yellow/Kelp Slub Fabric.

What do you think? Which is your favorite fabric and what do you think I should use for the curtains? I’m leaning towards the gray ikat.

I love this tray I found at Target, which I thought Ethan would hate, but turns out he loves it! Its pretty heavy, so makes a great drink holder without having to sit right on the end in order to reach the end table.

I also dragged Ethan to Home Goods on our last date night to buy this over-sized basket to hold my hoard of blankets. Although, my electric throw stays on the couch. If I could have bought an electric couch, I would have. haha

I still have a lot of work in mind for the basement – check it out and please offer your own suggestions! I will note that I am not painting the basement. The builder beige is not my favorite but its a new coat of paint and I really don’t want to paint such a large room of paneling. haha #lazy

  1. Love ALL those fabrics! I tend to lean to the overly cheerful so my vote is for the yellow Ikat…however I adore all the fabrics you chose. They work amazing together and in your space!

Looking great Jocie!! Love the couch you guys picked and the pillows look so good. I love the pop of yellow and the mix of prints in the fabric. I think the yellow print would make a great curtain!

I am in love with the gray and yellow! Your room already looks fabulous with what you’ve done, but I can’t wait to see it when you’re finished! I need to check out Online Fabric Store for fabric for my future projects! For the curtains, I’m leaning toward the yellow with the gray bird. I really love that print!

  5. LOVE the new sofa. It’s got style. The toss pillows are darling and I ADORE that tray!!!! The walls look fine, and I totally get that. I wait until they need it, by then, you’ll be ready for new pillow accents and you can get a whole new look πŸ˜‰ I’m no help with fabric, I was there last night looking for a coral pattern to mane pillows out of and I can’t even help myself. lol. ~Shannon

  8. Perfect choice for that space – lots of room for the family. Love the fabric and style of it too. The pops of yellow with the grey are so pretty. I think floor length drapes with pops of yellow and white would look so pretty. Love the white tray on the ottoman. Looking forward to seeing how you finish decorating this space.

  9. It looks great already! I love the gray and yellow color scheme. It’s perfect for brightening up a basement!!

  10. Mary Sue Paulis says:

Using Pinterest really let you plan the room. Nice job. I love the yellow accents in the pillows and lamp. The patterns of the fabric are really cool. For the curtains I like the yellow with gray bird or some fabric with both gray and yellow in it.

  11. Jeanine says:

I really like the way the yellow and grey pillows give it a little pop and the blue polka-dot pillow is another nice accent, it’s super cute. I really love blue polka-dot. It’s all a nice hint of color to room. Well done!

The room looks great! All the fabrics are so pretty and rich looking! I think the bird fabric would be fun for curtains and I agree on making them for length πŸ™‚

  21. Liz says:

Would it be creepy for me to buy everything from your Pinterest board/basement makeover and do it in my family room?? Seriously though, I really need some new pillows but have been dragging my feet about going to get fabric… Looks like I’ll be visiting online fabric store and definitely not creepily buying all the same prints as you! πŸ˜‰

  22. Kim says:

The yellow pops look awesome! For the curtains – gray will limit you less on wall/fabric/decor options in the future, yes? Either way, you can’t really go wrong. Great inexpensive makeover!
