How To Paint a Watercolor 1960’s Van: For Kids, by Kids

April 26, 2019 | by Jocie (email) |

Hi, my name is Lucy and I am home with mom my today for Take Your Child to Work Day. I am  going to tell you how to paint a watercolor 1960’s van. I chose to paint this because my art teacher, Mrs. Ross taught me how to do it. Mrs. Ross taught us about the 1960’s van promoting peace during war.

Here are the materials you will need for this art project:

  • Pencil
  • Fine Sharpie
  • Watercolor Paint
  • Watercolor Paper
  • Watercolor brushes: #0, 8, 18
  • Imagination

First, you draw a van with pencil.

It should look like this…

When drawing the wheels, draw two half circles, one in the front and one in the back. And then draw two ¼ circles just in front of the two half circles.

Second, decorate your van. My theme was Easter. So I drew bunnies, Easter eggs, ice cream, Easter baskets, and candy. Ice cream isn’t really a part of Easter but I like it and its sugar.  I named this picture “Eat More Sugar” because there is a lot of sugar in the eggs.

Third, paint your van colors of your choice. I picked bright colors because Easter is bright. I painted the small details with a #0 brush and the van and wheels with a #8 round brush.

Fourth, paint a fun background. I used yellow for the sun, blue for the sky, and black for the road with a #18 brush. Then I used a #8 round brush to add some yellow into the road.

Last, I traced the pencil lines with a fine Sharpie.
